This repository includes a map (in English and Danish) of estimated fluoride concentrations in drinking water, supplied by public waterworks in Denmark and the underlying data, used for producing it (see brief description below). Main purpose of developing these data-products was: 1) for the map: to be used as a figure in a book (currently in preparation); 2) dataset 2 provides comprehensive spatiotemporal characterization of average exposure to fluoride through drinking water in Denmark, which can be applied in epidemiological studies of the health effects of low fluoride exposure. Brief description: 1) The map shows annual volume-weighted mean fluoride concentration at the water supply areas (WSA) of public waterworks in Denmark (2013-2022). 2) Dataset 1: A clean dataset with drinking water fluoride concentrations at private and public waterworks (WW) in Denmark (1903-2023). 3) Dataset 2: A dataset with the estimated annual volume-weighted mean fluoride levels at public water supply areas (WSA) (1980-2022).

Notes
| Relation between the data-products: The map is based on Dataset 2. Dataset 2 is based on Dataset 1 and the WSAs (Schullehner 2022, https://doi.org/10.34194/geusb.v49.8319). The WSA polygons and the link between waterworks and WSA was updated where necessary. The volumes used for estimating volume-weighted annual means were also from Jupiter database. Dataset 1 is based on data extracted from Jupiter database and extensive data-quality assurance, including various quality checks and filtering of fluoride samples. Composition of data-products: Dataset 1: 165,084 fluoride samples from 5,668 waterworks (1902–2023), with a mean fluoride concentrations of 0.345 mg/L Dataset 2: 104,092 annual fluoride estimates for 3,622 WSAs derived from annual fluoride estimates at 3,975 waterworks (1980 - 2022), with an annual mean fluoride level of 0.328 mg/L. |
