The PROMICE Ice Mask is a high-resolution dataset outlining the contiguous ice masses of the Greenland Ice Sheet. Developed as part of the Programme for Monitoring of the Greenland Ice Sheet (PROMICE), it provides a detailed, up-to-date representation of the ice sheet’s extent. The dataset supports monitoring and research related to Greenland’s cryospheric changes and contributes to assessments of sea-level rise. The ice masks are derived from multi-source satellite mosaics and aerial images, manually refined at high cartographic detail, and classified to distinguish between different ice-margin types.

This mapping of the PROMICE Ice Mask is an important step toward a more comprehensive understanding of Greenland’s cryospheric dynamics and its contribution to global sea-level rise. With the expected acceleration of ice sheet mass loss, a detailed and regularly updated outline of the Greenland Ice Sheet is more important than ever. Understanding these changes and their implications is critical for effective climate adaptation strategies. Therefore, it is planned to regularly update the PROMICE Ice Mask with new inventory years.
